Post-Mastectomy Fitting Guide
Your body has been through so much, and you deserve comfort and confidence. This guide is here to help with compassion and practical information.
You Are Not Alone
Millions of women have walked this path. Finding the right bra and prosthesis is a deeply personal journey, and there's no "right" way to do it. Take your time, be gentle with yourself, and know that excellent options exist for every preference.
Your Fitting Timeline
Immediately After Surgery
Soft, front-closure bras with no underwire. Many hospitals provide post-surgical bras. Lightweight fiberfill forms can be used as soon as comfortable.
6-8 Weeks Post-Surgery
Once fully healed and cleared by your doctor, you can be fitted for a permanent prosthesis. This is a good time to visit a certified mastectomy fitter.
Ongoing
Weight changes, further treatment, or simply time may require refitting. Most insurance covers a new prosthesis every 1-2 years.
Prosthesis Types
Silicone Breast Forms
Most realistic weight and feel. Matches body temperature.
Foam/Fiberfill Forms
Lightweight, comfortable. Good for active lifestyles.
Partial Shapers
Fill in asymmetry or minor loss.
Cooling Forms
Designed for hot flashes and warm weather.
Insurance Coverage (WHCRA)
The Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) requires health plans that cover mastectomy to also cover:
- ✓ Reconstruction of the breast
- ✓ Surgery on the other breast for symmetry
- ✓ Prostheses (breast forms)
- ✓ Mastectomy bras (typically 2-6 per year)
- ✓ Post-mastectomy swimwear (some plans)
Contact your insurance provider for specific coverage details. Many certified fitters handle insurance billing directly.
