The confusion is that the United States and the United Kingdom order those letters differently, and many US brands add extra D's (DDD, DDDD) where UK brands switch to single letters (E, F, FF). So the same breast can be labelled a US DDD, a UK E, or something else again depending on the brand.

This matters because most mainstream US retailers stop around a DDD, which leaves anyone bigger thinking they have run out of sizes, when really they have just run out of that retailer's range. The letters keep going, and full-bust brands carry them.

The order is only half the story: cup size is relative to the band. A 32DD and a 36DD hold different volumes even though the letter is the same.
